Piaget’s watchmaking origins
The Swiss watchmaker Georges Edouard Piaget began his business in 1874 as a supplier of mechanical movements to other brands, including Cartier, Rolex, Vulcain, and Ulysse Nardin. In 1945, he began manufacturing timepiece movements in his own factory in La Cote-aux-Fees. His success in the watch industry spread to Neuchatel, where his company quickly became renowned.
The company’s ultra-thin mechanical movement has become one of its trademarks. Its first ultra-thin hand-wound movement was released in 1957, causing a stir at the Basel Fair. The brand then developed the world’s thinnest automatic movement, the Calibre 12P, in 1960. It became the benchmark for ultra-thin men’s watches and quickly gained global recognition.
The first Piaget CEOs were Gerald and Valentin, who wanted to give the company a unique signature and distinguish it from other Swiss watchmakers. The Piaget family continued to improve the company’s design and development of new movements, which would become the hallmark of the Piaget watch. In 1943, the family trademark was registered. This mark has stayed on the brand’s history for over 150 years.
As the brand’s reputation spread, its svelte and elegant watches were the first to feature ornamental stones on the dial. This new style of watch became popular among celebrities at the time, and Yves Piaget was convinced to open his own boutique in Marne-la-Coquette. In 1967, Piaget’s famous ambassadors visited the Swiss watchmaking brand in Gstaad to present its new Ref. 9401, an ultra-thin white gold watch, dated 1970.
