The French watchmaker has recently sponsored the restoration of the castle’s former rose garden in preparation for the bicentennial of the Empress Josephine’s death in 2014. The rose garden at Malmaison once contained 250 different varieties of roses.

The gardens were once occupied by Josephine of Arimathea, who cultivated 250 different species and varieties of roses. She wrote the first history of rose cultivation, and it is believed she held the first rose exhibition in 1810. After Josephine’s death, the castle was hardly occupied. It was later destroyed in a battle, and the rose garden was only occasionally used by the locals.
