A Vintage Tiffany & Co Jean Schlumberger Ten Diamond Cross Pendant

A vintage Tiffany & Co. Jean Schlumberger ten diamond cross pendant is an elegant example of the jewelry designer’s talent. The artist gained a reputation for producing stunning pieces of jewelry that captivated his clients. Schlumberger’s friendship with Tiffany & Co. vice president Nicolas Bongar helped him gain even more exposure. Schlumberger’s work is still very much in demand today.

Jean Schlumberger’s career

A New York Herald Tribune article published in 1956 featured the career of Jean Schlumberger. He was one of the first jewelry designers to win the American Fashion Critics Jury Award. Schlumberger’s talents were soon appreciated and he added boxes to his collection. His jewelry was also collected by many notable tastemakers. This particular piece commemorates his long and distinguished career. The artist had a unique vision, drawing inspiration from natural forms and marine life.

The acclaimed French jewelry designer lived a glamorous lifestyle. He traveled the world, spending time in glamorous locations such as Capri. In 1961, he posed with Jackie Kennedy and Bunny Mellon in the Wildenstein Gallery. In 1963, Schlumberger and Bouchage lived at 15 Rue des Petit Champs in Paris and 160 East 92nd Street in New York City.

Despite this turbulent career, Schlumberger created countless works. His early works are on display at the MFA St. Petersburg. Later on, he created a series of elaborate jewelry including pens and picture frames. Her jewelry was worn by celebrities and socialite clients. Her work at the museum continues today through March 31, 2019.

His friendship with Nicolas Bongar

In the 1930s, Schlumberger started to create costume jewelry, employing porcelain flowers mounted on clips. The Parisian couturier Elsa Schiaparelli sought his help. The sculptural approach he used was in direct contrast to the Art Deco style. He created gold cigarette lighters in the shape of fish, and a brooch in the form of a warrior, studded with rubies and diamonds. His work became so popular that he was hired as a designer by Tiffany & Co.

After World War II, Schlumberger emigrated to New York and began to work in a precious jewelry firm. While working for his uncle, he became friends with Nicolas Bongard, a friend from his youth. Bongard was a professional jeweler and had studied under his uncle, Rene Boivin. The two men became friends and partners in their business. They would later collaborate on many pieces together, including the Tassel Suite.

During World War II, Schlumberger joined the French Army and survived Dunkirk. After the war, he moved to New York City and worked briefly in the fashion industry. There, he met Nicolas Bongard, who would become the bridge between Schlumberger and jewelers. Bongard was also a friend of Schlumberger’s; his uncle was famous fashion designer Paul Poirot, and he worked for houses like Reve Boivin and Lacloche. In 1946, Schlumberger and Bongard opened their own jewelry salon, which he co-owned with Nicolas Bongar.

His work for Tiffany & Co.

A Swiss native, Schlumberger joined Tiffany in 1956, and his career grew to include the creation of many of the company’s most iconic pieces. In his early years, Schlumberger made bejeweled buttons for models such as Elsa Schiaparelli. In addition, he designed many of Tiffany’s wild buttons, including a star-studded button emblazoned with his signature.

After serving in the French army during World War II, Schlumberger was able to return to New York and open a jewelry salon with Nicolas Bongard. Upon arriving at Tiffany, Schlumberger was approached by the company’s chairman, Walter Hoving, who offered him a position as a designer. In 1956, Schlumberger had his own studio on the mezzanine level of the Fifth Avenue store. There, he crafted elegant jewelry for the likes of the Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo, and Audrey Hepburn.

In addition to his iconic Hedges and Rows necklace, Schlumberger is also known for designing various cufflinks and brooches. His designs have appeared in a number of advertising campaigns and have even made their way into the collections of popular celebrities like Jay Z. Whether you’re looking for an elegant ring or an elegant pair of cufflinks, the iconic Blue Bird on Rock Brooch by Jean Schlumberger is an excellent investment.
